Biography
Arriving from Albania in 1982, Tedi Papavrami discovered in France a country and a culture that were totally foreign to him. His natural sensitivity and his need to tame the French language in order to make the country his own, as well as his great loneliness at the start, led him to devour books, always in French: Stendhal, Proust, Flaubert, Dostoyevsky, Chekhov, Kafka...
It is his curiosity, combined with the intellectual and artistic demands that enable him to bridge the gap between his instrument and other horizons, that sets this rare performer apart in the musical world. So it was only natural that in 2000, after the death of Albanian translator Jusuf Vrioni, he should take up the challenge of translating the works of Ismaiï Kadaré, whom he had known as a child in Albania, for Editions Fayard. This escape into the literary world also became a way for him ‘to exist professionally for the first time outside the violin’. In 2013, he went on to write Fugue pour Violon Seul, an autobiographical account published by Robert Laffont.
Prior to this, Tedi began a career as a soloist and chamber musician in the 1990s, winning several prizes. He has since collaborated as a soloist with conductors such as K. Sanderling, A. Papano, A. Jordan, E. Krivine, M. Honeck, F.X. Roth. He has performed in concert and recorded with partners such as Philippe Bianconi, Gary Hoffman, Marc Coppey, Nelson Goerner, Viktoria Mullova and Martha Argerich. In June 2014, his recording of Eugène Ysaÿe's 6 sonatas for solo violin and the sonata for two violins by the same composer - with violinist Svetlin Roussev - simultaneously received the Diapason d'Or and Shock awards from Diapason and Classica magazines. At the same time, Tedi has for many years been working as a duo with pianist François-Frédéric Guy on Beethoven's 10 sonatas. Their recording of these works was released in 2017. Together with cellist Xavier Phillips, they are currently continuing their work on the complete Beethoven trios.
The year 2021 will see the release of Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata and Prokofiev's 2nd Sonata with pianist Martha Argerich (Avanti Classics), as well as a new recording of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas (Alpha).
Now based in Geneva, Switzerland, Tedi has been teaching violin at the H.E.M. since September 2008. He plays on a violin built for him in 2022 by luthier David Leonard Wiedmer.
