Biography

Elise Bertrand violinist and composer

Born in 2000, Élise Bertrand began playing the piano at the age of 5, the violin at the age of 8, and composition three years later.

Nominated ‘Instrumental Soloist of the Year’ at the 2024 Victoires de la Musique awards, Élise has a dual career as a violinist and composer, passionately championing the lesser-known and contemporary repertoire, combining interpretation and creation.

A much-appreciated chamber musician, she performs alongside Gaspard Thomas, as part of a duo, but also as a soloist in various concertos from Vivaldi to Szymanowski, including those by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Kossenko and her own works, which she plays alongside the Ensemble Appassionato, the Orchestre de Montpellier, Casco Phil, the Mahlerian Camerata, the Orchestre Colonne, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Provence, the Orchestre Etesias et Azur, the Ensemble les Déconcertants, the OLC... etc

She is currently in her 3rd cycle of violin studies (Diplôme d'Artiste Interprète) at the CNSMDP, which will enable her to perform as soloist with the Orchestre des Lauréats du Conservatoire at the Cité de la Musique in Szymanowski's 2nd Concerto in 2025.

After studying at the Toulon Conservatoire, she entered the Paris Conservatoire at the age of 14, where she studied violin with Suzanne Gessner and composition with Nicolas Bacri.
At the CNSMDP, she obtained a master's degree in violin and a master's degree in chamber music sonata with Gaspard Thomas, while continuing her studies in the advanced writing classes at the same institution (harmony, counterpoint, fugue, orchestration, etc.). In 2022, she became Artist in Residence at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth in Augustin Dumay's class.

A laureate of the Gautier Capuçon, L'Or du Rhin, Safran and Charles Oulmont Foundations, Elise has won numerous violin, chamber music and composition competitions. In autumn 2019, she won 2nd Prize in the Ginette Neveu International Competition and the Special Prize for the best interpretation of a contemporary piece.

She will take part in the Académie de Villecroze (2019), the Seiji Ozawa and International Menuhin Music Academies (2021 and 2022), the Académie Jaroussky (2021-2022) in the Tchaikovsky class, the Stauffer Academy in Cremona with Gil Shaham in 2023 and the Académie Ravel in 2024.

As a violinist, she has performed at La Roque-d'Anthéron, in recital at the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad, the Fondation Maeght in St Paul de Vence, the Easter Festival in Aix-en-Provence, the Auvers-sur-Oise Festival, the Palazetto Bru Zane in Venice, the Antwerp Spring Festival, the Colmar International Festival and the L'Offrande Musicale Festival.

Published by Billaudot and Klarthe, his works have been commissioned by ensembles, eminent instrumentalists, competitions and institutions, and have been broadcast on France Musique, Radio Classique and ARTE Concert. In 2022, his Sonate-Poème, Op.11 was awarded the medal of the Académie des Sciences, Lettres et Arts d'Arras. She has also been the subject of articles in Classica, Diapason, Pianiste, Classykeo, Traversières Magazine and The Strad Korea.

Élise has been composer-in-residence at the Festival d'Auvers sur Oise, for the Classeek Ambassador Program, and has honoured commissions from the Quatuor Modigliani, the NFB, Emmanuelle Bertrand, the Piano Campus, Épinal and Larrieu competitions, Augustin Dumay, the Orchestre Colonne, Les Métaboles, the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth, Renaud Capuçon and others...
After a first monographic recording, ‘Lettera Amorosa’, acclaimed by the press, her next recording as a composer will be for the Claves label in winter 2025. Élise plays a violin by Joseph Gagliano, Naples 1796, generously loaned by the Fondation d'entreprise Société Générale.

She is represented by Agence Nicole Viciana.
